    Medieval
Crank-handle Ferries Wheel Inscripted in the Guiness Book of World Records
The ferries wheel's charm lies in its construction which is reminiscent of wooden
water-wheels. An amazing piece of equipment, seemingly built of wood, with great
    entertainment value.
Four gondolas, each capable of holding 2 adults or 3 children, hang between two
water-wheel-like wheels. Ballast sandbags hung from the gondolas guarantee a smooth and
pleasant ride as they can counteract differences in passengers weight. Three to four
crankers on the periphery of the wheel get it up to full operational speed. By means of an
axial foot pedal crank on the base of the ferries wheel, the operator can maintain the
duration of a ride from 100 to 150 seconds. The feries wheel has a neutral gear as well as
forward and reverse gears, a brake, and an emergency brake. These technical innovations
were approved by TÜV Munich (German safety inspectors). The ferries wheel is mounted on a
double axel trailer, weights 2500 kilograms, and is 4 meters high, 3 meters wide, and
5 meters long. It is immediatly ready for operation without a lot of seting up. The idea
for the construction came to Peter Petz while studying old source material dealing with
scissors grinders who used a foot pedal to keep a large stone in motion. In the late
Middle Ages, royal pleasure gardens had similar ferries wheels that used serfs to provide
the immens power needed. Nowadays, unions allow workers a maximum work load of 20 Nm, Petz
has reduced this hand powered operation to 5 Nm.
